The borough’s newest – and only – craft brewery dusted down its tanks and begun preparing their fresh Belgian style beers last week.
Solvay Society replaced Ha’penny Brewing Company at the Cuckoo Hall site in Aldborough Road North, Aldborough Hatch earlier this year.
Ha’penny, run by Gavin Happé and Chris Penny, proudly served porters and ales to Redbridge for seven years.
When the pair closed the business in February due to “personal reasons” they wanted to make sure another craft brewery took over.
Solvay Society, from Hackney, was looking to expand its operations – a perfect fit.
Owner Roman Hochuli, 27, told the Recorder: “It’s been a really positive start, it took us a while to get our registration sorted but now that’s done we are just excited to get brewing.”
Solvay currently brew three Belgian beers, inspired by Roman’s upbringing in the country.
A light hoppy Coulomb Saison, a classic Belgian Pale Ale and a Tripel which is three styles of beer uniquely mixed with pink peppercorns.
Roman started brewing in his bedroom five years ago, and even he admits he produced a mixed bag.
“The beer was alright at first, but I was never one for sticking to a recipe and started experimenting and they got pretty weird.
“I remember one time I was trying to boil 10 litres of beer on the kitchen stove and the hob just blew up.”
Roman set up Solvay Society with co-owner JP Hussey around three years ago, and they have slowly refined their beers to be unique and affordable.
They claim to be the only craft brewery dedicated to Belgium beers in the capital.
“We will continue to supply the pubs we started with in Islington and Hackney but are looking to expand to places in Redbridge.
“We’re excited to get to know the area and see which pubs and bars would like to try our beers.”
