The expansion of Heathrow airport has been ruled unlawful by the Court of Appeal in a victory for climate campaigners fighting to block controversial plans for a third runway.

Judges concluded the government's decision to permit the expansion of the UK's busiest airport was illegal because ministers did not take into account the impact on the country's commitment to tackle global warming.

Campaigners hailed the ruling as a victory, and said it had 'killed off' plans for a third runway for good.

Heathrow will be challenging the ruling.

There is no doubt this decision has direct impact on the proposed expansion of City Airport. I have campaigned with local community and Hacan East to prevent permission being given for a 50pc increase in flights using City Airport.

On a weekly basis I am contacted by frustrated constituents who argue that the current noise and air pollution levels in the area are already unacceptable.

I oppose the concentration of City's flight paths without any respite being provided and feel any expansion will have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of my constituents.

The Heathrow ruling is significant and is aligned with the wider environmental movement which argues that the growth of aviation needs to be curbed if we are to conquer climate change. I do not disagree that expansion bring jobs and help the economy, but I do question whether the economic benefits will outweigh the environmental problems they will bring.
