The spirit of the Romans lives on in Seven Kings after pupils at Farnham Green primary school built a Roman road using ancient techniques last Thursday.

The children from all 3 classes in year 3 built the section of road with help from school caretaker Vincent Cannon, 50, who supervised the project.

Although he did all the heavy lifting and breaking up of the stones, the children added the finishing touches by sprinkling handfuls of gravel over the top and finishing off the mortar with a trowel.

The project was introduced to help the children better understand how the Romans introduced early infrastructure in to the UK after they had watched videos of Roman techniques.

The school plans to continue the project each year with subsequent sets of students adding another section to the road with their own unique marker on it.

Mr Cannon, who is relatively new to his job as a caretaker after starting in September, said: “The kids absolutely loved it and so did I, they all know my name now as well which is great.

“They seem to have taken a lot from it and have a genuine enthusiasm for learning about the Romans as a result.

“If they ever come back to visit once they’re older they’ll be able to visit their own little piece of Roman road which will be really nice for them.”
