A charity has won the right to open a Hindu primary school in Redbridge.

The I-Foundation will run the new 840-pupil school after the Office of the Schools Adjudicator selected its bid from a choice of three.

Redbridge Council and The Al-Noor Foundation, which wanted to open an Islamic school, both put in bids to run the new primary.

The I-Foundation’s school, which will open in September 2012, will be on the site of the current Ilford Jewish Primary School, Carlton Drive, Barkingside.

That school is moving to the grounds of King Solomon High School in Forest Road, Barkingside.

The adjudicator made his decision on the basis of “choice and diversity” as required by law.

He said the contract should be awarded to a voluntary aided school because there are already 37 community primary schools in the borough. The Hindu school will allocate 75 per cent of its places to any pupil in the borough, regardless of their religious belief.

These places will be prioritised by how close the family lives to the school.

The remaining 25 per cent of the places will be given to Hindu pupils living in the area.

The primary will also cater for 52 nursery-aged children

“I would like to welcome the I-Foundation into the community of Redbridge schools and I am confident that it will not only provide much needed school places for the borough but it will also offer high quality education provision for many local pupils.”
