An amusement park inspection company has confirmed that the slingshot ride in a viral TikTok video at Winter Wonderland “did not snap or fail.”

Onlookers and those queuing for the ride in Hyde Park were left horrified as the incident unfolded last night (December 14).

One video, which has been viewed more than 33,800 times on TikTok and Twitter, shows two people preparing for the ride in a metal spherical pod.

As the ride started to move and the passengers went up into the air, the mechanism appeared to stop and caused the pod to crash into the support beam of the ride.

A spokesperson for Amusement Device Inspection Procedures Scheme confirmed that the ride was inspected at 7am this morning (December 15).

They said the elastic cord and the steel wire rope supporting the reverse bungee gondola have “not snapped or failed in any way”.

It was found that a technical issue occurred within a sealed gearbox that controls the release of the elastic cord and steel wire rope.

The technical issue was also confirmed by a Hyde Park Winter Wonderland spokesperson.

It said the riders were escorted off and checked by onsite medics, confirming they were not injured.

The ride has now been closed while further investigation takes place, according to a Winter Wonderland spokesperson.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said that they were called to the popular Christmas attraction but “no action” was required by them. 

The pair on the ride were freed by on-site staff, according to the brigade.

The full statement from Amusement Device Inspection Procedures Scheme said: “We can confirm that the elastic cord and the steel wire rope supporting the Reverse Bungee gondola in which the public sit has not snapped or failed in any way.

“We inspected the ride at 7am this morning and it was found that a technical issue had occurred within a sealed gear box that controls the release of the elastic cord and steel wire rope.

“The HSE has been informed.”

The full statement from Hyde Park Winter Wonderland said: “We can confirm that a technical issue involving the reverse bungee occurred on Wednesday evening.

“Both riders were safely escorted off the ride, checked by our on-site medics and were not injured.

“Safety is our highest priority and the ride is closed while further investigation takes place. All of our rides undergo rigorous and regular safety checks by experienced members of staff trained in health and safety.

“We also provide regular training for all staff to ensure our visitors can enjoy a fun and safe experience.

“All other attractions at Winter Wonderland are operating as normal.”

The full statement from London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters were called to Winter Wonderland last night as two people were trapped inside a bungee carriage.

“They were freed by on-site staff and there was no action required by the Brigade.”
