A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in hospital after a 14-year-old boy was killed in Hainault.

Louisa Rolfe, Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner, confirmed this afternoon (April 30) that the arrested 36-year-old man suffered injuries when his van crashed into a house in Thurlow Gardens.

He remains in hospital undergoing treatment.

"At this time given his injuries we have been unable to interview him," Ms Rolfe said.

"As a matter of urgency we are trying to understand exactly what happened and why."

Ms Rolfe also sought to address speculation that the 36-year-old had been previously arrested.

"Despite urgent and extensive checks today we have found no trace of a prior incident involving him so far," she said.

Police had been called to Thurlow Gardens just before 7am today to reports a vehicle had been driven into a house.

There were also reports people had been stabbed.

Five injured people were taken to hospital.

The 14-year-old boy later died and two police officers required surgery due to their injuries.

The officers and two other members of the public are not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.
