A shopping centre in Ilford was forced to temporarily close this week after a downpour left the floors soaked.

Shoppers at the Exchange Ilford in High Road, were made to evacuate the complex on July 9 after the sudden rainfall.

A spokesperson for Exchange Ilford said: “Due to a small mechanical glitch the roof vents at the centre remained open at the time of a sudden downpour.

"This led to the floors becoming sufficiently wet that they represented a slip hazard to our guests.

"We always prioritise public safety and therefore made the decision to temporarily shut the centre just after 3pm.

"We would like to say thank you to all the staff, tenants and guests for their support and understanding.”

The shopping centre is believed to have reopened at around 5pm, after the vents were repaired and the water cleaned up.
