A police officer was struck by a "reckless and dangerous driver" during a chase on the A12.

Police attempted to stop a grey Lexus at the major road's junction with Barley Lane in Little Heath on Tuesday (August 6) at about 4.45pm.

The vehicle failed to stop and a chase ensued - police said the driver of the Lexus mounted the pavement before crashing into one of the officers.

He was taken to hospital and continues to receive treatment after the suspect drove from the scene and abandoned his car on the Kingsmead Estate in Hackney.

Det Insp Jonathan Potter said that police smashed one of the car's windows before the crash took place.

“Our colleague was injured while trying to keep the public safe from a reckless and dangerous driver," he said. "Please help us to find him.

"No one should be hurt while simply doing their job," he added.

The crash followed a chase authorised by police after the driver of the grey Lexus failed to stop.

Police today provided an update on the officer's condition.

"Thankfully, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. He is being supported by colleagues."

Det Insp Potter urged witnesses to get in touch with any information.

“We need your help to identify the person who was driving this car.

"Did you see it between the A12 and where it was found in Hackney?" he asked.
