A specialist eye surgery that could help thousands of patients with glaucoma is expanding in east London.

Glaucoma ophthalmology is being made available in Ilford with “a new approach” combining precision treatment with cataract surgery by the CHEC NHS community healthcare service.

Advanced techniques are used to minimise blockages at different pressure points in the eye, to enhance natural fluid drainage.

“This helps prevent the progression of glaucoma,” consultant ophthalmologist Mahmoud Rabie explained. “It saves the health of the optic nerve in the process.

“The surgery also simplifies post-operative care as the eye’s natural drainage system is restored quickly after surgery, reducing the need for glaucoma eye drops.”

The combination of improved fluid drainage and a microscopic implant added to a membrane within the eye works to deal with the symptoms of glaucoma and cataracts.

It minimises optical nerve damage and vision loss to support long-term eye health.

A small number of hospitals have taken part in a trial carried out earlier this year by CHEC, a community healthcare provider for the NHS, including at its Ilford centre at the Horizon Building in Ilford Hill.

“We’re now able to offer this service on behalf of the NHS,” Mr Rabie added. “This brings advanced treatment to the local community to improve choice, treatment and quality of life.”

The surgery is said to be less invasive than traditional methods of treating glaucoma, reducing risk and making sure of a faster recovery.

The aim of the new service is to give patients more knowledge about treatment options and to manage their glaucoma treatment that can be “a significant aspect of recovery”.

CHEC is an NHS community ophthalmology and gastroenterology service set up in 2012 to provide specialist surgery on behalf of the NHS.

Those experiencing mild to moderate glaucoma with compromised drainage of fluid in the eye are being urged to speak to their optometrist or GP.

They can also get information about the treatment direct by email to customerservices@chec.co.uk.
