A murder probe has been launched after a fatal stabbing in Ilford. 

Officers from the Metropolitan Police were called at 1.06am this morning (October 4) with reports of a stabbing in Chapel Road. 

They attended with members of the London Ambulance Service, the force said.

At the scene, a 50-year-old man was found suffering from a stab wound in the corridor of a block of flats.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he was pronounced dead at 1.30am.

His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, according to the Met.

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder, aged 40, 36 and 28. 

They remain in police custody at this time while the investigation continues. 

Det Ch Supt Lewis Basford said: “My thoughts are first and foremost with the man’s friends and family.

"I understand this incident will cause concern in the local community, but I’d like to reassure you that this investigation is progressing at pace led by specialist detectives.

“However, I’d encourage anyone who has any information who hasn’t spoken to us yet to get in touch."

Police officers are expected to be conducting controls in the area over the coming days to offer reassurance to the community.
