Crime on buses has increased by more than 25 per cent in the borough in the last year – as offences across London on the whole have declined.

Criminal activity across the whole of the capital’s transport network has decreased for the ninth year running, TfL reported.

But in Redbridge the number of offences rose from 313 to 393 – a 25.6pc increase.

Between April 1 2014 and March 31 2015 there were 171 thefts on bus routes and 131 incidents of violence against a person.

Cllr Gwyneth Deakins, the deputy leader of Redbridge Liberal Democrat group, called the figures “shocking” and “a matter of concern”.

She said: “What is going on in Redbridge which is not going on elsewhere?”

The boroughs with the next biggest total percentage increase were Hounslow (9.4pc), Sutton (8pc) and Richmond upon Thames (6pc).

There were 2,502 less offences across London compared to 2013/14 – a rate of seven offences per million passenger journeys.

Cllr Deakins added: “I hope it is not because the police are being withdrawn from this borough to do things elsewhere in London.

“All boroughs must have longer routes or bigger populations [like Redbridge].”

Cllr Deakins said she hoped the police were going to make more of an effort to “reverse the trend” in the borough.
